Manufacture high-quality consumables; build up world’s famous brand-----Interview with Mr. Yang Weidong, President of Wuxi Nest Biotechnology January 10th, 2010
On 10th, January, Nest held “Nest’s 1st annual Distributor Conference" successfully in Wuxi. With cooperation and win-win as its main theme, this conference attracted almost 200 distributors, buyers from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Xiamen, Jinan and Taiwan and other foreign counterparts from Korea and Japan. Bio-Equip attended this conference as invited media. We fortunately interviewed President of Nest Biotechnology Mr. Yang Weidong during this conference and got a deep understanding of Nest’s development, R&D, and market promotion. Bio-Equip: First, on behalf of all the users and netizens, I would like to express thanks to Mr. Yang for this interview! As an emerging high-quality laboratory consumables supplier, would you first introduce Nest’s developments? What is the background of your company (Why choosing laboratory consumables)? Mr. Yang: Based on the molding design advantages of its group company Vanguard, Nest entered into life science industry in 2007 and was founded at the beginning of 2009.We invested and founded this life science company which offers laboratory consumables in accordance with current market situation and national development policy. For example, our nation encouraged real estate development 5 or 10 years ago, and it would be a good prospect if we followed its policy. Now it is too late to invest in real estate. So it is with the life science industry. A few years ago, our nation paid less attention to this industry and thus this industry was not well developed. Our nation promulgated a series of polices to show that our government will strongly support the development of bio-pharmaceutical industry which will become a pillar industry. We invested in life sciences mainly because of the great potential in this industry. Bio-Equip: What do you think about imported products and domestic products in this industry? Why Nest aimed to enter the high-end market? Compared with other products, what are the advantages of Nest’s products? Mr. Yang: As to imported products with international brand, many foreign brands have flocked into Chinese market because they regarded China as a prosperous market and would get large profits in this market. For domestic manufacturer in this industry, they had to imitate foreign products a few years ago due to some constraints. They led a way of low cost, low price and inferior quality. In the next few years and the near future, I believe that they will have independent research and development abilities and manufacture consumables of high quality. I think this is the way of development decided by China's national conditions. Nest has positioned itself to market demand as the supplier of high quality lab consumables since it was founded. The current requirement for lab consumables dictates that we should enter into the high-end market directly. Maybe we are the leader of domestic manufacturers, however, domestic users haven't fully accepted domestic high quality lab consumables and high-end users still prefer imported brand. As a result, we will face great competition pressure. It is the same with the global market. We are confident in our products, so we insist that negotiate with our customers about the price after they receive the samples and know products quality. Bio-Equip: As an emerging company, Nest has expanded its production line up to over 100 kinds of products including cell culture, molecular biology and micro-imaging areas in recent 2 years. Would you please introduce Nest’s development strategies and the core competitiveness? Mr. Yang: I think the core competitiveness should be the good quality of products. Even better promotion and sales cannels will not be competitive unless there are high quality products. We mainly control our quality by three steps of work: First is to ensure good production line and raw material, second is the standard GMP management in manufacturing and last are different treatments according to experiments requirements. The last step which is also the weakest step for domestic manufacturers is really important in manufacturing high-quality lab consumables. We have continued to improve in these aspects and our products can well meet the requirements of cell culture and molecular experiments. Our preliminary development strategy is high investment: we imported production equipments and keep compliance with international standards; in preliminary market promotion, we started from colleges and universities in big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. We promoted through sending them free samples. Later we started our marketing in all domestic market as well as global market. Meanwhile, because of previous high investment, our company is not profitable at the moment and we predict that this year we will begin making profits. Bio-Equip: As to our assessment reports, some of Nest’s cell culture consumables are not inferior to Corning and Nunc products, and even better than these products in some index. We wonder how you can ensure high quality of product. Also, can the newly-developed products be of the same high quality? Mr. Yang: The key to life science experiments is repeatability which requires stable quality of consumables. Nest should improve and keep stable quality if we wanted to be an international brand. In order to meet this requirement, Nest develops its production line from both hardware and software. In hardware, Nest is equipped with professional imported machines (e.g. the German and Belgian plasma treatment machine), tools and high quality raw materials. Also, we would to bring in professional R&D researchers to meet the requirements. We require that all Nest’s products will meet these international standards. We also improve our workmanship to meet relative standards. Bio-Equip: With the development of your company and market demand, what are your new plans for products’ R&D and promotion in the new year? Mr. Yang: In 2010, we mainly continue to develop our sales cannels and promote our products in global market. Bio-Equip: Finally, could you introduce the long-term plan and target of your company? Mr. Yang: 2011 will be the sales year of Nest products and 2012 will be the culture year of Nest. Our final purpose is to build the biggest laboratory consumables manufacturing base of Asia Pacific Area, and to make Nest brand comparable to some well-known international brand as Corning and Axygen with first-class quality. Postscript: The temperament of one company is often decided by the charisma of its leader. During the interview with President Yang Weidong, I deeply feel that his courage and spirits that is not afraid of any failure.
